It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in April that I met the Macedo family. The brief California Spring rains had come and gone, leaving bright yellow blooms and sunlit hills of soft and wispy golden grass.
Evelyn was 38 weeks pregnant: radiant, glowing, and expecting her second child any day! She and her husband Angel had decided to keep the sex of the baby a surprise, so their son Santos had no idea whether or not he had a baby brother or a baby sister coming!
I love the wonderfully sacred moments I witness during Maternity and Family Sessions: the hopeful anticipation that comes with waiting to meet your baby, paired with the somber nostalgia of saying goodbye to the season of life you’re currently in. The result of this combination is an acute awareness of wanting to cling to the present moments while relishing the future in store.
“I do not want to forget the vulnerability that comes with pregnancy.
Many think it’s a weakness but I’m learning that it’s only a phase and one I will grow from.”

Booking a Session with me isn’t just about having photos of you and the kids looking at the camera and smiling, it’s about capturing the connection, intimacy, and tenderness of the everyday kind of love you share. I always ask clients what it is that they desire to have memorialized in their Sessions, and it really gives me a window into the moments they want to remember in 10 years time …
When asked what she would like to capture during this Session, Evelyn had a beautiful and poignant response:
“I would love for you to capture our bond, since it will change once our second child is here.
For my husband and me, it will be our love for one another.
For my son and I, it would be our strong bond since I breastfed him for 2 years and I am his calming person.
For myself, it would be my love for myself and my body’s capabilities.”
Just a week and a half after these photographs were taken, on April 29, 2021, the Macedos welcomed their new son, Ivan, into the world. I’m so grateful that we had the opportunity to capture their last days as a family of three, and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Welcome, baby Ivan!
