Do you want to know the most incredible part about this job?

It’s hearing your stories, and the privilege it is to hold them close, and to create art from them.

Last year, I held my annual Compassion Sessions and actually chose three recipients whose unique stories I’ll be sharing.

Today, I’m honored to share the Licup family’s beautiful story. Jenny and John are easily two of the kindest, lovable souls I have ever met. Their strength and resilience amidst impossibly difficult circumstances along their journey to parenthood is both inspirational and beautiful.

Below was John’s comment to nominate his wife, Jenny:

“I nominate my wife who has been through so much pain and heartache this year. She has had 5 miscarriages and the most recent one was our son who was born too early at 20 weeks gestation.

He was conceived through IVF and we thought that was it – we thought we were finally going to have our family. Unfortunately, we lost him.

My wife has had so many surgeries to help us conceive. She is currently pregnant again and she is keeping strong even through grief. My wife wears her scars like the warrior that she is and she is the epitome of what a mother’s sacrifice is.”

I’m so thrilled to share with you all some images from Jenny and John’s Studio Maternity Session, which we were able to capture at 35 weeks — just about a year after they lost their first son, Jaxon. In her own words, I’ve included some of their journey to becoming parents to their little one(s).

“My name is Jenny Licup and my husband is John Licup. We have been married for 4 years and have been in a long journey to starting our little family. We decided to expand our family in 2018, however, our first pregnancy ended in ectopic pregnancy and I lost my left tube due to it. I had multiple miscarriages following that (all early in the first trimester).

We decided to seek help from a fertility doctor in 2020 exactly when the pandemic started. Our first transfer failed. Our second one resulted in our angel in heaven, Jaxon, who we ended up losing at 20-week gestation (5 months) last March 2021.”

“It was a very difficult time and we are still grieving and coping. We decided to transfer another of our embryos and successfully got pregnant again and I am currently 21 weeks. We are not out of the woods yet as I have a high risk pregnancy based on my history, and viability is at 24 weeks. We are cautiously excited even though our hearts are bruised from the painful experiences we’ve been through.

We love acknowledging our first born, Jaxon, and including his name in whatever we do, however we can.Our journey to parenthood is definitely something that is very important to us.

Aside from that, I think how we are as a couple, our marriage is something that we want our future kids to be proud of. We want them to know that when things that were meant to break us apart, made us stronger together and we held on to each other even tighter. Also, that we are going to keep fighting to get them here, earth-side.”

“I am still learning to cope with losing my first born and looking ahead to meeting our rainbow baby. I am learning to give myself grace when I don’t feel well enough to do things at this stage in my life.”

[When a mother goes through womb loss, the most challenging part is] the uncertainty of everything. I have learned to take things hour by hour, and day by day to help with the anxiety.

This experience has made me more patient.

I am no longer wishing for time to pass by faster.

I just want things to be okay.”

“Everyone in life is going through something and it is important to be kind.

I hope I raise [my children] to be ready for whatever life will throw at them and that they remain strong-willed and hopeful, always.

I wish they always remember their big brother, Jaxon, and to live life to the very fullest.“

The Licups recently welcomed their second son, Paxton, into the world: a healthy, dimply, and beautiful baby boy. Congratulations, John & Jenny! You’re both amazing.
