Sandra and Fritz welcomed a new member to their family at the end of 2021: a little girl named Emery, and I am so happy to (finally) share with you the images from their in home Newborn Session. It was a calm and cloudy January morning when we captured these photographs. Their home was still in quasi disarray as they settled back home from Labor & Delivery at the hospital, still adjusting to caring for two littles, shuffling back and forth between grandparents’ house, and the general universal chaos that the Newborn phase tends to bring.

But you certainly couldn’t tell from these images, could you?

Being a mother of two and having gone through two pregnancies and postpartum phases myself, I know how exhausting and limited our mental capacities as new mothers can handle on so little sleep! That’s why I strive to make everything as stress – free as possible for you: so that you can have those timeless memories of this brief time with your new baby captured, without having to worry about forgetting something.

The Barrogas had previously scheduled a Maternity Session with me as part of my 2 Session Maternity / Baby Collection bundle. Because we had already worked together, not only was their son Ethan comfortable being photographed by me, but Sandra and Fritz already knew my photography style and at ease being directed by me.

We ended up photographing in their Master Bedroom, where there was an ample amount of natural light pouring in despite the overcast morning. I get asked very often what is necessary for an in home session, and the answer is LIGHT! I am looking for neutral colored walls and abundant window light to achieve my signature light and airy photography style. Who would have guessed?

When I checked in with Sandra prior to their Session, she let me know her preferences and priorities for what she wanted to capture at Emery’s Newborn Session and I handled the rest! Easy.

When photographing siblings during Newborn Sessions, parents are always concerned about cooperation and short attention spans (especially with toddlers). It was certainly the case at this particular Session that even though big brother Ethan was excited about baby sister’s arrival, he had some difficulty staying still for the entire Session. This is completely normal and expected. I have yet to meet an angel unicorn toddler who is 100% compliant, patient, and attentive during an entire Session: they just don’t exist, and you know what? That’s okay! At such a young age, toddlers often aren’t developmentally ready to stay still or control their little emotions for longer than a short period of time. Not only are they often in transition because of the introduction of a new family member, having new people in their familiar space is often very stimulating on their nervous systems, which can bring out behaviors that aren’t typical.

That’s why so often I hear from my parents, “They’re not usually like this!”

Please do not stress! There is nothing that your toddler can do or say to surprise me, because I have seen and been through it all myself. This is just a glorious passing phase, like all of the other phases of childhood, and rest assured that I will be able to work with your child, however short their attention span may be.

With toddlers, we often need to take lots of breaks and let go of our expectations. Sometimes they’ll want to hold baby, and sometimes they want nothing to do with baby. Sometimes they will want to cuddle, but other times they’ll want to run around. We just go with the flow!

All I need from you is your calm and patience. Our children feed off of our collective energy, so it is important to remain calm.

For all of my Newborn Sessions, I provide everything necessary for baby. No need for you to browse or shop or worry about what baby will wear. I have a range of neutral swaddles, bows, bonnets, and blankets that will complement you and your family.

For my postpartum mothers, I offer postpartum and nursing friendly pieces from my Client Wardrobe. Sandra opted for this pretty and flattering nude / blush ribbon tie maxi dress.

Fritz and Ethan basically wore the same pieces that they had worn for their previous Maternity Session, and guess what? It still worked! I’m all for making things easier, and if that means wearing the same pieces, why not?
