On Photographing Motherhood

Why I photograph mothers

I decided to launch Tiffany Chi Photography with the passion of capturing the ephemeral moments of childhood, and the eternal love of motherhood.

Capturing motherhood fulfills me as an artist because becoming a mother was the transformative part of my own story.

The relationship between a mother and her child is one of the most vulnerable relationships in this world.

It’s raw, real, beautiful, meaningful, and at times, painful.

Motherhood photography is taking something expected and everyday (a mother caring for her child) and bringing to light its significance.

To photograph a mother is to say that the moments of her life are ones that really matter.

She matters.

On August 31, 2016, I became a mother.  I never really saw myself as a mother.  I am the youngest of 3 in my family and was never around anyone younger, never had the compulsion to “mother” my dolls or stuff a pillow in my shirt to pretend I was pregnant.  Instead, I spent my time daydreaming.  As a child I had a rich inner world that I could spend days exploring on my own, and it was in that space that I spent practically all of my life.

Becoming a mother for me was a shock not unlike jumping into a giant pool of ice.  Your body is numb, in pain, and yet brilliantly feeling everything at the same time.  Nothing makes any sense.  The walls that I had built for my world brick by brick were dismantled.

The private little world where I sequestered was invaded.  Every spare iota of energy, love, patience, awe, thought, everything is poured into this tiny little human that I created.

My firstborn, Aimee, invaded my heart like spring invades a winter landscape. I didn’t know how desperately I needed her until I had her, because she gave me the gift of purpose. To have a child fully dependent on you is to bestow upon you an undeniable purpose. She was, for me, living proof of God’s redemptive love.

I want you to know that whatever you are going through right now, however dark, however brilliant, that you too, are loved with purpose.

As a mother, you give of yourself in ways that you would have never imagined giving.  Your body. Your heart. Your life.  For them.

This is exactly what I strive to capture in my images. All of who you are — your whole heart, frozen in time.
