As the week comes to a close, try as I might to be present, the TO DO list just stretches longer into infinity. So often as a mother, it’s easy to disappear into your children and forget about your “self”: the woman underneath all the endless laundry, bills, paperwork, meals, snacks, work, and more snacks. (Really, the snacks are endless.)

My own identity when I became a mother is still something I’m trying to figure out. I’m finding a way to be myself while simultaneously giving of this self, day in and day out.

Some days, I have more than enough, and some days my cup is completely empty. This season of our lives while they are still little and still need you constantly is so brief and fleeting in the grand scheme of things. It’s short when compared to the 18 years you may have with them under the same roof. Most days it can feel too overwhelming, overstimulating, and chaotic when compared to the peaceful and meandering days before anyone ever called you “mama,” and you were just, you.

But, these days and these moments are worth remembering. Their early years, as well as your first early moments as a mother. You will never have these days back.

One day, they will stop asking to be carried, stop reaching for your hand, and refuse your hugs and kisses. So hold them close, kiss and hug them, and document these moments while you still can.
