Jessica and Gil welcomed a new member to their family of three little girls: a little boy named Olivier, making them a party of six! I am so happy to (finally) share with you the images from their Baby and Family Session taken in their lovely home in Anaheim Hills. In her own words, here is the Solis Family’s story:

“My husband and I married in 2015 and with the exception of one year, have been pregnant every year of our marriage. We had one miscarriage in 2019, so our Lola baby (3rd girl) was extra special and emotional.

We chose to have our 4th so she could have a little sibling close in age. We are trying to replicate having 2 babies back to back as we did with our first 2 since they have such a lovely strong bond. Since it is our last baby, I wanted to capture a Session in between newborn and sitter/6 months. I’m trying to hold onto all the babyness!

We were a family of all girls so having our final baby be a boy definitely threw us a twist and his older sisters are thrilled to have a little prince, Olivier, in the family.

For this session, I hope to capture lifestyle (your specialty) looks in our home. I’d love a very comfortable, loving look.”

It was important to Jessica to be able to capture the atmosphere of love and family that was apparent as soon as you walked through the door. I was welcomed and greeted by the girls with excited chatter, and taken by the hand for a tour of their absolutely darling shared rooms fit for the princesses that played in them!

I get asked often what the difference is between my Newborn Sessions and my Baby & Family Sessions and why they are priced differently. The main differences are the age of baby and the duration of the Session. Newborn Sessions are taken between 3 – 10 / 12 weeks and last 90 minutes while Baby & Family Sessions are for older babies 4 months or older and last 60 minutes.  In my experience, I have found that Newborn babies tend to need that extra 30 minute buffer because they tend to require more breaks and additional time to feed or fall asleep.

“I’ve spent the last 6 years creating a family. I’m looking forward to feeling normal and to get back to my self. Pregnancy has always been rough on me and I’ve felt so guilty that I’ve been neglectful with the children already born as I spent so much time sick and in pain or laying down that I’m excited to start living life and enjoy my children.

They have all been so patient waiting for me to heal during and after each pregnancy: always checking in on me — how I’m feeling and doing. I’m so grateful for them and now I want to be able to spend quality time with them and be more active and physical with them.“

Baby Olivier was about 4 months at the time of this Session, and was a wonderful little model being showered with love and adoration by his big sisters.

Although the lighting throughout the home was beautiful, we ended up photographing in their Master Bedroom, where there was an ample amount of natural light pouring in. I get asked very often what is necessary for an in home session, and the answer is LIGHT! I am looking for neutral colored walls and abundant window light to achieve my signature light and airy photography style. If you’re interested in a Home Session for these sweet “lifestyle” images, but you’re not sure whether or not your home will be suitable, feel free to reach out and inquire! Together, we can gauge whether or not a home Session will be possible.

Jessica and I spoke in depth prior to their Session to coordinate every family member’s little outfit, and she let me know her preferences and priorities for what she wanted to capture at their Session and I handled the rest! So easy.

If you don’t want to be bothered with tidying up your home and worrying about whether or not there is enough light for a Session, you always have the option of having your Maternity, Newborn, or Baby and Family Session in my natural light Studio! My Studio offers a neutral white, minimalist, and light and airy palette for some beautiful timeless images.

When photographing siblings during Sessions, parents are always concerned about cooperation and short attention spans (especially with toddlers and younger ones). It was indeed the case at this particular Session that even though the girls were excited about baby brother and being able to put on pretty dresses, the older girls were cooperative, but the second youngest had some difficulty following instruction for the Session — which is totally okay!

I want to make it clear that this is completely normal and expected. I absolutely do not expect your little ones to follow every instruction dutifully during your Session! I have yet to meet an angel unicorn toddler who is 100% compliant, patient, and attentive during an entire Session: they just don’t exist, and you know what? That’s okay! At such a young age, toddlers often aren’t developmentally ready to stay still or control their little emotions for longer than a short period of time. Not only are they often in transition because of the introduction of a new family member, having new people in their familiar space is often very stimulating on their nervous systems, which can bring out behaviors that aren’t typical. That’s why so often I hear from my parents, “They’re not usually like this!”

Please do not stress! There is nothing that your toddler can do or say to surprise me, because I have seen and been through it all myself. This is just a glorious passing phase, like all of the other phases of childhood, and rest assured that I will be able to work with your child, however short their attention span may be.

With toddlers, we often need to take lots of breaks and let go of our expectations. Sometimes they’ll want to hold baby, and sometimes they want nothing to do with baby. Sometimes they will want to cuddle, but other times they’ll want to run around. We just go with the flow!

All I need and ask from you is your calm and patience. Please refrain from reprimands, threats, or ultimatums. Our children feed off of our collective energy, so it is important to remain calm. If we are not able to capture a very specific shot or pose, I ask for your grace and understanding. I will never force a child to do something that they do not want to do. I have found that forcing or insisting will simply upset them further and create unnecessary pressure, and we want this to be an enjoyable and fun experience for them! If all else fails, I encourage you instead to be playful, engaging, inquisitive, and talk to your little one.

Being a mama of four, Jessica had plenty of tricks up her sleeve, and she actually brought out a small jar of mini white yogurt chips / chocolate chips to hide on baby to produce some really sweet images of little Lola with her little brother! I’m not above hiding snacks to get the shot! (It makes for a funny memory, too)
