“All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.”
Helen Keller
1 in 4 pregnancies end in loss. It is unfortunately more common than most realize because it is not often spoken about. But its prevalence doesn’t make the experience any less painful and lonely.
March is Pregnancy After Loss Awareness month, and I wanted to take a minute to recognize the conflicted mixture of grief and joy, bridled hope and constant anxiety of pregnancy after loss.
Pregnancy after loss can outwardly look beautiful and exciting, but inwardly feel like conflicted grief, uncertainty, fear, anxiety, confusion, guilt, holding your breath, fear of celebrating, fear of hope, constant worry, illegitimacy, and self hatred of one’s own body.
Questions like, “Aren’t you excited?” can be triggering because excitement and happiness feels dangerous. Hope feels painful.
So often, when you look at the women and children in these frames, you see a beautifully radiant expectant mother-to-be, or a delightfully squishy newborn babe. However, what you may not see is that the mother in the image buried two of her previous children, without ever being able to hold them in her arms, see their faces, kiss their foreheads, hear them cry. You may not see that the baby in the frame is here only after years of desperate prayer, loss, and tearful nights. You may not see that due to health complications, the child is the only one she may ever have, so she is trying to savor every minute.
It is for this reason that I never treat a Session or my families as “just another Session” or “just another Client.”
I recognize that these are your stories. Your prayers come true. Your grief and joy and loss remembered. These moments matter because you’ve fought for them. And they’re deeply important to me, because they deserve to be honored.
Reach out if you’d like your special moments captured with care and sacred honor.
I’m here for you.
